NUO Reimagined
Nuo opera is one of the oldest ritual performance traditions in China, originally developed as a spiritual practice to ward off evil and pray for blessings. At the heart of these ceremonies are masks—each a symbolic portal between human and divine, the real and the imagined. Yet today, many of these masks and their cultural meanings are rapidly fading from public memory.

Our Mission
This is not just a preservation project—it is a reimagining. By translating traditional symbols into interactive digital forms, the installation infuses new energy into the visual language of the Luo School, and invites contemporary audiences to engage with cultural memory in a tactile, embodied, and emotionally resonant way. In doing so, we aim to bridge the past and the present, allowing forgotten masks to speak again—through technology, through art, and through the curious gaze of every viewer.

To preserve and reintroduce this endangered heritage, we have selected 30 of the most iconic Nuo opera masks from across China and digitally reconstructed them in high-resolution 3D, capturing every detail of their form, texture, and spirit. These digital masks form a virtual museum of Nuo culture, a lasting archive of intangible heritage brought into the digital age.
At the Luo Zhongli Art Museum, these 45 masks become part of a site-specific interactive installation. Visitors can engage with the masks in real time using gesture-recognition technology—zooming in, rotating, and exploring every nuance of their design. Paired with immersive audio guidance, the experience invites the audience to put on headphones and step into the mysterious world of Nuo rituals. Through spatial sound design and narrative voice, the installation conjures a sensory space where ancient spirits, communal memory, and individual perception merge.
